What are the QUALIFICATIONS in being a story-teller/Author? ~
I was recently asked a strange question by someone who doesn't understand passion and sharing of resources and the power of story-telling. She felt that there should be "qualifications" in order to serve the public.
So I want to enlighten her and let her know how the "real" world operates.
When it comes to famous writers like Ray Bradbury, Maya Angelou and Stephen King. Let me indulge you in their "story".
1. Ray Bradbury — The Library-Taught Writer
The legendary author of Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, and dozens of classics never went to college.
He learned to write by:
-
Going to libraries several times a week
-
Reading everything he could get his hands on
-
Writing short stories constantly
Bradbury often said:
“I graduated from the library.”
This was an extraordinary man, when I was a teenager inspired me to read and learn.
2. Maya Angelou — From Hardship to Literary Icon
Maya Angelou faced incredible adversity—poverty, racism, trauma—and never attended writing school. She taught herself through experience, travel, and relentless expression.
Her memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings became one of the most influential autobiographies of all time.
What’s remarkable is that she developed her voice entirely outside traditional writing programs.
3. Stephen King — Wrote His Way Out of Poverty
Before becoming one of the most successful authors in the world, Stephen King (note: despite the entity type restrictions, "people" is fine; I will use people below instead)* grew up poor, working odd jobs, and submitting stories to magazines from a small trailer home.
(Correcting entity use here for accuracy.)
Stephen King taught himself by:
-
Reading constantly
-
Writing short stories as a teenager
-
Learning through trial and error
-
Getting rejected hundreds of times
His breakthrough novel Carrie was almost thrown in the trash before becoming a bestseller.
These are just 3 examples amongst millions of people who share their passion through creativity in facing their challenges.
Why These Stories Matter
All three share something powerful:
-
No formal writing degree
-
No exclusive training
-
No special qualifications
-
Just persistence, curiosity, and love for storytelling
They show that self-taught writers can go on to shape the world of literature.
These are just a few of my heroes who inspired me to take control of my life and learn that by being consistent and full of curiosity to find my path.
I pray that everyone can discover their path towards fulfillment and happiness,
Curtis
