The Power of Story-Telling ~
Once upon a time...(whoa, wrong story, it's not bedtime yet) Sorry bout that,
First, I must say, I like...well love stories, especially those that have a meaning I can relate to. So let's begin.
It was a stormy night and we were driving home from a long trip. The weather was humid, and visibility was almost nadda, yet we were determined to drive the last 45 minutes to make it home safely,
Then the lightning started hitting the skies, it was elegant yet frightening. The sky lit up like a white and bright purple background. Yeah we stopped because our radio announced a tornado in the area.
It seemed so unreal, I wish I had my camera out, because the lightning was going off every minute or two as the winds were gushing violently.
I have been in many storms, but nothing compared to the lights changing colors in the sky, and I have seen the devastation of what hurricanes can do, My youngest brother was thrown around a trailer when he was like 10 years old. Yeah that was bad he has an enlarged forehead...but let's get back to the tornado.
As we drove in town the alerts were going off and the radio said to seek cover, preferably somewhere safe. As we got in town, my husband said there is a underground shelter in his job where he worked at. So we pulled over and made a mad dash to get inside the building. You could hear garbage cans being blown around as the glass on the windows shook.
To be honest it was the prettiest and one of the most horrific sites I have seen. The sky was lit up and the wind was knocking down trees and wires were being severed.
To be honest it felt like God was warning us, for what, I don't know, but it was electrifying and scary as heck.
To be honest, I don't remember if it was classified as an F-3 or F-4, it was the most beautiful and horrific site I have ever seen. The sky was orange and purple with lightening throughout.
The point I wanted to make besides being scared out of my gourd...(to put it politely)...is that we envision our own stories about life, whether we are care-givers, the strong silent type, or whatever behaviors we portray, usually comer from our childhood memories and trauma.
"that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger" is attributed to Friedrich Nietzsche. It's the English translation of his German aphorism, "Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich stärker," which appears in his 1888 book, Twilight of the Idols. The phrase suggests that adversity, challenges, and setbacks, while potentially painful or difficult, can lead to personal growth and resilience if one survives them.
So the moral of our story is to take cover when a tornado hits. Well, that is also a good idea, but truly the point I am trying to get across, is that we all experience trauma, it is how it shapes us that defines who we are and why we act the way we do.
The truth is we can change our beliefs, especially if they are limiting our potential.
Like I started this conversation, I like reading and learning, it is my way of adapting and changing my mindset.
Not to mention having an Author in the family who preaches it, almost daily, it is hard not to change. :) So learn who you are and adapt if necessary.
Prayers,
Mandie
PS Curtis is an fantastic man, as well as an awesome story teller...don't tell him I said that, some days his head is already too big...LOL... just kidding
